Getting started/Install the browser extension

Install the browser extension

Updated 13 Aug 2026

On this page

The Ellie browser extension adds a toolbar directly into Gmail Web and Outlook Web — click it to generate a reply on demand. This is Ellie's manual-trigger mode: you choose which emails to draft, and Ellie writes them on command.

If you'd rather Ellie run in the background and create auto-drafts for incoming emails, see Connect your inbox & turn on auto-drafts instead.

Step 1: Install the extension

  • Chrome — Install from Chrome Web Store
  • Firefox — Install from Firefox Add-ons
  • Edge — Install from Edge Add-ons

After installing, you'll see the Ellie icon appear in your browser toolbar.

Step 2: Sign in

When you first click the Ellie icon (or open Gmail/Outlook Web after installing), you'll be prompted to sign in or create an account. Use your email address and the sign-in flow will take you through to app.tryellie.com .

Step 3: Open Gmail or Outlook Web

Go to mail.google.com or outlook.office.com (or outlook.live.com for personal accounts).

Open an email you want to reply to and click Reply. You'll see Ellie's toolbar appear inside the reply box.

Use the extension

See Replying with Ellie for a full walkthrough of the toolbar buttons.

To use Ellie in another web-based email service, see Launching Ellie Anywhere .

Troubleshooting

"I don't see Ellie's buttons in Gmail"

Make sure the extension is enabled (click the puzzle-piece icon in your browser toolbar and check Ellie is turned on). Try refreshing Gmail after installing.

"I'm being asked for a licence key"

Sign in at app.tryellie.com — licence keys are the legacy activation method and are no longer required for new accounts.
