Use Ellie in the compose or reply window

Updated 21 Oct 2026

On this page

This UI lets you guide how Ellie drafts a reply inside your email client. You can choose the response tone, whether the reply should sound interested, and whether to generate a Short reply. If roles are available to you, you can also switch roles for the draft and add extra context before generating a reply.

How to use it

  1. Open a compose or reply window where Ellie is available.
  2. Choose the tone you want Ellie to use:
    • Respectful
    • Casual
    • Annoyed
  3. Choose the reply stance:
    • Interested
    • Not interested
  4. If you want a shorter draft, select Short reply.
  5. If your workspace uses roles, open the roles button and choose the role you want to use for this draft.
  6. If you need to give Ellie more instructions, select the + button and enter extra context.
  7. Select the main write control in the Ellie UI to generate the draft.
Ellie remembers the options you select, so you may not need to reselect them for every draft.

Caveats and limits

  • Extra context is limited to 500 characters.
  • If no role is selected, Ellie uses your current default behavior for drafting.
  • The compose/reply controls appear only when Ellie is available in your email client.
