Understanding what Ellie can see and what it stores is important — especially if you're connecting a work email account.
Two modes, two different privacy profiles
How much data Ellie accesses depends on which mode you're using.
Extension-only mode (no connected account)
If you're using the browser extension without connecting your inbox:
- Ellie only reads the email thread that's currently open in your browser — nothing else
- It does not access your inbox, sent folder, or any other emails
- Email content is sent to our AI provider to generate the draft, then discarded
- Nothing is stored after the draft is generated
Auto-drafts mode (connected account)
If you've connected your Gmail or Outlook account at app.tryellie.com:
- Ellie reads incoming emails as they arrive, to categorise and draft replies
- Email content is sent to our AI providers (OpenAI / Azure OpenAI) for processing
- Ellie stores the generated draft reply and related processing data needed to support categorisation and drafting
Connected calendar mode (optional)
If you also connect your Google Calendar (optional, separate consent):
- Ellie reads limited event fields needed for availability-related features
- Event titles, descriptions, locations, attendee email addresses, organiser, conferencing links, and attachments are not used
- Read-only — Ellie can't create, modify, or delete events, or send invites
See How calendar integration works for details.
What Ellie does NOT do
- Does not send emails on your behalf (all drafts require your review and action to send)
- Does not read emails you receive from others in extension-only mode
- Does not sell your data
- Does not use calendar event titles, attendees, locations, or descriptions even when calendar is connected
AI providers
Email content is processed by OpenAI and/or Azure OpenAI. These providers are governed by their own data processing terms. See the privacy policy for the latest details.
Data storage
- All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest
Full privacy policy
See tryellie.com/privacy for retention periods, data subject rights, and contact details for privacy enquiries.
