Email training: teach Ellie from sent emails

Updated 13 Aug 2026

On this page

If you don't have a connected account (or want to supplement automatic style learning with specific emails), you can submit emails manually through Email Training.

You can also add website URLs and uploaded documents to the Knowledge Base to give Ellie business context.

Email training (forward as attachment)

Step 1: Get your training email address

  • Sign in at app.tryellie.com
  • Go to app.tryellie.com/knowledge
  • Click the Email Training tab
  • Copy your unique training email address

This address is private to your account — only emails sent to it affect your style profile.

Step 2: Forward emails as attachments

Go to your sent folder in Gmail, Outlook, or any email client and select emails you want to use for training.

Important: use "Forward as Attachment" (or "Forward as .eml") — not regular "Forward". Forwarding normally sends the email as a quoted block, which Ellie can't process correctly. You need the original email attached as an .eml file.

  • In Gmail: open a sent email → More (three dots) → Forward as attachment
  • In Outlook: select a sent email → More actions → Forward as attachment
  • In other clients: look for "Forward as attachment" or "Export as .eml" in the message options.

Step 3: Check the status

After sending, return to the Email Training page in app.tryellie.com/knowledge and check the log for each submitted email's status:

StatusMeaning
ProcessedSuccessfully ingested
PendingBeing processed — wait a few minutes
FailedCouldn't be read — check the email was forwarded as an attachment
SkippedDuplicate or outside the daily limit

Once your emails show as "Processed", Ellie will use the style in future drafts.

Troubleshooting training emails

"My training email shows as Failed"

  • Make sure you used "Forward as Attachment" — not regular Forward. The email must arrive as an .eml attachment.
  • Check that the email is from a verified address (the one you signed up with, or an address you've connected).
  • Very short emails (a few words) may not contain enough style signal to be useful.

"I'm not seeing a training email address"

This feature requires a paid plan. Sign in and check your current plan at app.tryellie.com/dashboard .

Knowledge Base: URLs and file uploads

The Knowledge Base gives Ellie factual context about your business so it can reference real information in replies.

Use it when you want Ellie to answer questions about your products, services, pricing, policies, or anything else a customer or colleague might ask.

Add a website URL

  • Go to app.tryellie.com/knowledge → Add to Knowledge Base → URL .
  • Enter your website URL (e.g. your company homepage or help documentation). Ellie will crawl pages under that domain. You can exclude specific URLs if needed.

The crawl status is shown in the Knowledge page — it can take 10–20 minutes to complete for larger sites. You can re-trigger a crawl any time to pick up content changes.

Upload a document

  • Go to app.tryellie.com/knowledge → Add to Knowledge Base → File upload .

Supported formats: .pdf , .txt , .docx , .pptx , .md (up to 100 MB).

Format documents as informational content (like a wiki or FAQ page), not as a series of instructions. Ellie reads documents to extract facts, not to follow directives.
